SCARS
“Scars” is a photographic project about the degradation of the landscape in Banat, a region in northern Serbia where drinking water has been contaminated with arsenic for decades. Although invisible, water is a key conceptual element in the interpretation of the space. The project focuses on a meadow near Aradac, once a unique plain, now reshaped by excavations and embankments due to highway construction. The work stems from the contrast between the unresolved issue of a fundamental natural resource and accelerated industrialization. The photographs are taken at night using controlled artificial lighting and long exposures. These techniques emphasize textures and cool tones that evoke the chemical presence of arsenic, transforming the landscape into an otherworldly space. The scars in the landscape become visual traces of pollution, the absence of water, and ecological trauma, connecting personal experience with universal environmental concerns.
